Naming Bases
Ionic compounds that use regular ionic naming rules, starting with the metal name.
Naming Acids (Binary)
More complex; for binary acids (two elements), use HYDRO (NONMETAL PREFIX) IC ACID.
Naming Acids (Polyatomic Ions) - Step 1
Determine the name of the polyatomic ion bonded with Hydrogen.
Naming Acids (Polyatomic Ions) - 'ate' ending
If the polyatomic ion's name ends in 'ate,' the acid name ends in 'ic.'
Naming Acids (Polyatomic Ions) - 'ite' ending
If the polyatomic ion's name ends in 'ite,' the acid name ends in 'ous.'
Nitric Acid Example
Hydrogen bonded to nitrate (NO3) forms nitric acid (HNO3).
Nitrous Acid Example
Hydrogen bonded to nitrite (NO2) forms nitrous acid (HNO2).
