New cards

St augustines theodicy

reason for evil is because its the absence of good which is why natural evil exists, evil also exists because in the creation of Adam & Eve , they betrayed god gift of free will and ate from the tree of wisdom hence why moral evil exists as we are all seminally present in Adam.

2
New cards

pros and con of st augustines theodicy

pros- proves both moral and natural evil, supported by scripture, explains that God isnt a reason for evil or to blame, theres logic in it as moral evil reflects on human choices and consequences

cons- not universalised ,only believed by christians, if God is all powerful(omnipotent) why cant he put good where evil is , other people say its unethical that every generation is punished because of Eves mistake.

3
New cards

iranaen theodicy

We are created in the image of God and have to develop to be like him, world is seen as the “vale of soul making” where we overcome evil to be more like God. If free will didnt exist we wouldnt be making moral decisions to overcome evil, believers wish to be like God so they can reach heaven.

4
New cards

pros and cons of iraneans theodicy

pros-supports christians beliefs of hell/heaven, justifies moral evil, supported by scripture ,promotes free will so we become more like God on our own accord.

cons-doesnt explain natural evil, implies God prioritises soul development over moral pain, doesnt suggest he is omni potent ,philosophers argue that a benevolent God wouldnt inflict or allow pain/suffering on other to have a better development, if hes omniscient he could grant free will to the ppl who only use it for good not evil

New cards

free will defence

Swinburne -believed if we do the most evil thing and get punished we dont have free will

plantinga-he believed creatures are free from Gods determination but sometimes choose to do evil.

6
New cards

pros and cons- free will defence

pros-logically proves the inconsistent triad by saying God cant do the impossible but the possible, turns the blame for moral evil from God to humanity ,other theodicies focus on christianic beliefs but this doesnt

cons- If God is omniscient he knows what choice you will make with your free will before you make them so the choices are pre determined so its not fully free will, doesnt prove natural evil, God could make a world where everyone chooses to make the good choice all the time and as he didnt he is not all powerful
