Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
A motivated psychological theory of 5 needs that suggests one need must be met to reach the other.

Physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization
Physiological needs
Physiological needs are biological requirements for human survival.
What are some examples of Physiological needs?
Air, food, water, shelter, clothing, warmth, sex, and sleep.
Safety needs
Safety needs relate to the want to experience order, predictability, and control in their lives..
What are some examples of safety needs?
Emotional security, financial security, law and order, freedom from fear, social stability, property, health and wellbeing
Love and Belonging needs
This need is social and involves feelings of belongingness; the need for interpersonal relationships motivates this behavior.
What are some examples of love and belonging needs?
Friendship, intimacy, trust, acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love, and being part of a group either friends, family, or work.
Esteem needs
The need for respect, recognition, status, strength, freedom, and self esteem.
self-actualization needs
This is the top of Maslow's heiarchy and is the realization of a person's potential and self-fulfilment.
How to remember the Heiarchy of needs in 5 steps
1. Get good sleep and a big breakfast.'
2. Get ready for your occupation weather it is work or school.
3. Be sure to say good morning to your friends and family
4. Dress in a way that makes you feel powerful and boosts your self esteem.
5. Look at the mirror and tell yourself you are going to be the best person you can be.
How can you meet the physiological need in your classroom?
Keeping a fridge of cabinets with snacks and drinks for students that missed breakfast or to hold them over til lunch.

Keep the classroom at a comfortable temperature. Your students cannot learn if they are burning up or freezing. Keep a blanket in your classroom for times that you have one student that is uncomfortable with the temperature.

Be sure to create of set of rules and guidelines to be met in the classroom.

Have students create a social contract at the beginning of the year to establish how they wish to be treated in the classroom by their peers and the teacher.

Create seating that puts your students in groups or partners. Have your students pick their own seats and have that be their assigned seat for the next few weeks and switch it up. That way your students can make new connections in a way that does not put them out of their comfort zone.

Get to know your students and create a professional bond. This can be done through a get to know you activity and being regularly engaged with your students.

Give out letters of affirmation or appreciation gifts throughout the year to your students. these can be thank you notes for helping out in the classroom or just random notes of kindness. Have your students participate as well in giving each other notes.

Support your student's extracurricular activities. If you know your students are in soccer or UIL, go to their functions and give them good positive comments.

Have your students create one personal goal and two academic goals. They can be long term goals or short term goals and have them posted somewhere they can see them either on the wall or on the front of a journal or binder.

Physiological need.
What does it mean to reach self-actualization in the classroom?
All of the student's needs have been met and they are prepared to perform at their peak level of potential.
