Web-based computers
Devices like the Chrome Book that contain a limited version of an OS, come with a web browser and media player, and store user files on the internet rather than running traditional software.
Tablets
Portable computing devices that generally lack a built-in keyboard or mouse and rely instead on a touch screen and virtual keyboard.
Wearables
Devices such as smart watches and fitness trackers that can be worn by the user instead of carried.
MTSO (Mobile Telecommunications Switching Office)
The central office in a cellular network that controls all the transmitters or towers.
COPE (Corporate Owned Personally Enabled)
A deployment model where employees choose from a selection of devices owned and paid for by the company, allowing for both business and personal use.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
A deployment model where employees use their own personal mobile devices for business purposes.
Firmware over-the-air (OTA)
The method used to distribute security patches and updates for mobile operating systems wirelessly.
Geolocation
The identification of the location of a device through GPS capabilities.
Geo-tagging
The process of adding geographical identification data to media such as photos.
Tethering
The sharing of a mobile device's active internet connection with other devices over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Hotspot
A specific location where users can access the Internet via a wireless signal.
Jailbreaking
The process of circumventing limitations on Apple iOS to allow the installation of unapproved apps.
Rooting
The process of circumventing software limitations on Android devices to allow the installation of unapproved apps.
Sideloading
The practice of downloading and installing apps from unofficial third-party app stores rather than official sources.
QR (Quick Response) Code
A barcode that can contain a string of up to 4,296 characters, including URLs, which can be used by attackers to hide malicious links.
Containerization
A storage segmentation method used to separate business data from personal data on a mobile device into different "containers".
Remote wipe
A security feature that erases sensitive data on a mobile device if it is lost or stolen and cannot be located.
MDM (Mobile Device Management)
Tools used by organizations to manage devices remotely, including modifying settings, quarantining devices, and erasing corporate data.
Embedded system
A combination of hardware and software designed to perform a specific function, usually contained within a larger system.
Raspberry Pi
A low-cost, credit-card-sized computer motherboard with multiple I/O ports capable of controlling specialized devices.
ICS (Industrial Control Systems)
Systems that monitor and process real-time data to control physical devices like valves, pumps, and motors without human intervention.
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
Systems used for the management of Industrial Control Systems (ICS).
IoT (Internet of Things)
The concept of connecting any device to the Internet to send and receive data to be acted upon, ranging from home automation to medical monitors.
