New England
Founded by puritans and pilgrims. Wanted religious freedom. work hard for God.
Middle colonies
Founded by Dutch. “Breadbasket colonies”. Dutch wanted more trading power
Southern colonies
Find refuge, claim land. Many plantations and laid back.
Plymouth Colony
Pilgrims establish in Massachusetts. Wanted to completely change the church.
Mercantilism
System of creating and maintaining wealth through carefully controlled trade. England passed navigation acts, limiting trade to England only. Joint-stock, Triangular trade, and royal colonies.
Mayflower compact
agreement written in 1620 in Plymouth. “Protect the general good”. Pilgrims believed that everyone was equal and have basic rights.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
First written constitution in America. Extended voting to non-church members, representative government, desire of puritans to have religious freedom to reform. Prevent tyranny
House of Burgesses
Virginia company of London created Virginia house of Burgesses. 1st representative government in America.
Self-Government
colonists/townspeople elect representatives. gave them a say in religion and government. Made them consider themselves more independent.
Jamestown Colony
First permanent English colony in America. Made 1612 and sold tobacco to survive.
Tobacco and Plantations
Tobacco was a cashcrop that Jamestown found and popularized. High demand led to slavery and plantations. Sourced Africans, as Natives wouldn't do the work.
Quakers
Religious group in England, believed everyone should be in peace and harmony. Opposed slavery, treated Natives as equals. believed God resided in everyone. The Quakers quaked gods will, some of the first people to set up a colony in America.
William Penn
Founded Pennsylvania as refuge for Quakers, tolerant and diverse.
Pilgrims
Wanted to completely separate from church of England. Didn’t like how strict it was. Went to Massachusetts. Founded in 1620 and leviant.
Dutch
Founded middle colonies to get better trade opportunities. Created more diversity.
Thomas Hooker
Founded Connecticut in the new world for religious reasons. Didn’t agree with puritans in Massachusetts.
Middle Passage
Exchange of goods between Africa, America, and England. spread slavery, food, and diseases.

Series of 63 articles that for the first time in history, limited the king. The colonists created it to have more say.

George Calvert/ Lord Baltimore made a safe haven for English Catholics in Maryland. Allowed all christian religions.
Roger Williams
Founded Rhode island with Anne Hutchinson because he wanted the church and government to be separate. He was banished from Massachusetts.
Lord Baltimore
Founder of Maryland, he wanted a religious safe haven.
Columbus
Helped Spain establish rule in the new world, causing the colonies and Spain to have disputes.
