Ferrous Metals
Metals that contain iron (Fe) as the main element; they are generally magnetic and can rust if not protected.
Non-ferrous Metals
Metals that contain little or no iron; they are not magnetic and resist rust and corrosion.
Mild Steel
A tough ferrous metal with low carbon content that is easy to weld; used for fencing, gates, and motor vehicle bodies.
Cast Iron
A hard, brittle ferrous metal with good compressive strength; used for pots, manhole covers, and engine blocks.
High-carbon Steel
A very hard ferrous metal that holds a sharp edge; commonly used for cutting tools, chisels, and drill bits.
Stainless Steel
A ferrous metal that resists rust because it contains chromium; used for kitchen equipment, sinks, and medical tools.
Aluminium
A light, soft non-ferrous metal that resists corrosion; used for window frames, roofing sheets, and aircraft parts.
Copper
A non-ferrous metal that is an excellent conductor and ductile; used for electrical wiring and plumbing pipes.
Brass (Cu+Zn)
A non-ferrous alloy that is corrosion resistant with good machinability; used for taps, fittings, and door handles.
Plastics
Synthetic (man-made) materials produced mainly from crude oil.
Thermoplastics
Plastics that soften when heated and harden when cooled, allowing them to be reshaped and recycled repeatedly (e.g., PVC, PE, PP).
Thermosetting Plastics
Plastics that set permanently (cured) once heated and moulded; they cannot be melted and reshaped, as heating causes them to burn or char.
Electrical Insulator
A property of plastics that makes them suitable for safely covering wires and electrical fittings.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Safety gear such as gloves, safety glasses, and overalls used when cutting, grinding, or heating materials.
