A contraction of binary digit. A single unit of information in a computer (0 or 1).

A way of representing information using only two options.

Overflow Error

Error from attempting to represent a number that is too large.

Round-off Error

Error from attempting to represent a number that is too precise. Value is rounded.

Analog

Term used to mean something that has continuous representation.

Analog Data

Data values that change continuously over time. Some examples include music, colors of a painting.

Analog Image

Made from traditional tools (pen, pencil, etc) and on traditional media (paper, canvas, etc)

Digital Data

Data that changes discreetly through a finite set of possible values.

Sampling

A process for creating a digital representation of analog data by measuring the analog data at regular intervals.

Lossless Compression

A process of reducing the number of bits needed to represent something without losing any information.

Lossy Compression

A process of reducing the number of bits needed to represent something which some information is lost or thrown away. Process is not reversible.

Gives several creators’ rights to people producing creative work and decide who can make copies, distribute copies, display or perform work in public, and make derivatives

Fair Use

Allows use of copyright protected work without permission. No hard fast rule about what counts as fair use.

Public Domain

Creative work belonging to the public because copyright has expired or never applied in the first place.

A collection of public copyright licenses that enable free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work, used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work they created.
