Describe the economic crisis
France was broke after the 7 years war and funding the american revolution.
Describe the enlightenment
They were questioning why things were the way they were. Thomas Jefferson “LIberty and justice for all.”
Describe other nations situations
Switzerland hadn’t had a monarchy for over 300 years. Britain had a constitutional monarchy. America has a constitution.
Describe the poor leadership
Louis the 16th was a terrible and weak leader.
Describe the fuedal privileges of nobles
They were free from taxes. Peasants had no rights (even to hunt).
Describe the emerging of the middle class
They were paying all the taxes. Wealthy and educated were stuck in the third estate. They were critical of the monarchy.
Describe the disproportionate alnd ownership
1st Estate': 10% of the land 1% of the population.
2nd Estate: 25% of the land 2% of the population.
3rd Estate: 65% of the land 97% of the population.
Why was everyone starving?
Continuous major crop failure caused a national shortage in food.
King calls an estates general meeting, what happened?
Nothing is resolved. 3rd estate gets locked out. They then make the tennis court oath, “We will continue to meet until things change.” This was the first step towards revolution, as it was not sanctioned by the king.
What is the first physical action of the Rev?
They storm the Bastille for weaponry.
What was the major document?
“The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen”
What did this document do?
It restricted the monarchy’s power. Provided basic rights and freedoms to the citizens. Not just subjects but citizens.
Who does Franch declare war on?
Austria and then Prussia joins in.
Who else declares war on France?
Britain, Netherlands, and Spain.
What did Napoleon do?
-Recreated the monarchy
-Crowned himself emperor
-Napoleonic code (laws)
-Removed brith rights, replaced with leaderships based on merit.
-People wanted to fight for him
What were Napoleon’s military accomplishments?
-Attacked and conquered most of Europe despite 5 coalitions to stop him.
-Had only 2 losses, Battle of Trafalgar (lost to Britain’s navy) and waterloo (attempting to regain control over Europe)
-Was exiled twice
