France was broke after the 7 years war and funding the american revolution.

They were paying all the taxes. Wealthy and educated were stuck in the third estate. They were critical of the monarchy.

Continuous major crop failure caused a national shortage in food.

King calls an estates general meeting, what happened?

Nothing is resolved. 3rd estate gets locked out. They then make the tennis court oath, “We will continue to meet until things change.” This was the first step towards revolution, as it was not sanctioned by the king.
