Introduction to Business Procedures
A High School division event (9th and 10th graders only) featuring an objective test on administrative tasks, business protocols, and professional decision-making.
Event Elements
Consists of a 50-minute objective test containing 100 multiple-choice questions.
Career Cluster Framework Connection
The event is aligned with Management & Entrepreneurship.
Membership Deadline
FBLA national membership dues must be paid by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on March 1 of the current school year to be eligible for the National Leadership Conference (NLC).
Repeat Competitors Rule
Members may only compete in an event at the NLC more than once if they have not previously placed in the top 10 of that event at the NLC.
State Entry Limits
Each state may submit up to 4 entries per event for the National Leadership Conference.
Identification at Check-in
Competitors must present a valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, state-issued ID, or school ID) matching the name on their conference name badge.
Penalty Points
A deduction of 5 points is assessed for late arrivals to the testing site or for not following the FBLA Dress Code.
Online Calculator
Personal calculators are prohibited; however, an online calculator is provided within the testing platform.
Tiebreaker Criteria
Ties are broken by (1) correct responses to 10 pre-selected questions, (2) correct responses to 20 pre-selected questions, and (3) the shortest completion time.
Human Relations
A knowledge area involving work habits, ethics, employee training, work processes, and effective work relationships.
Technology Concepts
A knowledge area covering needs assessment of hardware/software, file management, and the use of productivity and multimedia software.
Communication Skills
A knowledge area focusing on oral and written instructions, listening skills, telephone techniques, and the composition of business documents.
Decision Making/Management
An area involving leadership styles, management functions, organizational charts, workflow priorities, and quality-control processes.
Career Development
An area covering career planning, job application materials (resume, letter of application), interview behaviors, and professional portfolios.
Business Operations
A knowledge area involving workstation organization, reprographics, mail processing, travel arrangements, and equipment maintenance.
Reprographics
Methods used for reproducing documents, including decisions on the best process and appropriate paper for specific tasks.
Database/Information Management
An area focused on maintaining document storage, inventory records, and alphabetical, subject, numerical, or chronological filing systems.
Tickler file system
A retrieval system used for tracking and maintaining records based on specific future dates or reminders.
Ethics/Safety
An area addressing office safety, privacy policies, emergency plans, and legal mandates such as the ADA and Sarbanne-Oxly.
Ergonomics
The study of factors related to workplace equipment design and its importance to the health and efficiency of the office worker.
Finance Objectives
Tasks include preparing banking transactions, managing petty cash, completing payroll documents, and implementing expense-control strategies.
Information Processing
An area involving the use of software to transcribe correspondence, create spreadsheets, generate database reports, and employ collaborative groupware applications.
