Scientific Method

the method of discovery used by scientists from the enlightenment onward.

Natural Phenomena

An observable event or occurrence in the physical world that happens naturally without any human intervention.

Observation

Something that is learned in the course of observing things.

Inference

any process of reasoning from premises to a conclusion

Qualitative

pertaining to or concerned with quality or qualities.

Quantitative

Is or may be estimated

Constraints

Limitation or restriction

Variable

Liable to vary or change; changeable

Independent Variable

a variable that is intentionally changed to observe its effect on the dependent variable

Dependent Variable

the event studied and expected to change when the independent variable is changed

Hypothesis

a suggested explanation for a group of facts or phenomena, either accepted as a basis for further verification

Experiment

a test, trial, or tentative procedure; an act or operation for the purpose of discovering something unknown or of testing a principle, supposition

Fair test

a scientific experiment where you change only one factor while keeping all other conditions exactly the same

Cohesion

the act or state of cohering, uniting, or sticking together

Surface tension

the elasticlike force existing in the surface of a body, especially a liquid, tending to minimize the area of the surface, caused by asymmetries in the intermolecular forces between surface molecules
