Tecumseh
A Shawnee chief who worked to unite the northwestern Native tribes.
Red Sticks
joined Tecumseh in his resistance movement while seeking to purge Creek society of its Euro-American dependencies.
Impressments
The practice of forcing people into service. British ships would stop American vessels and impress American sailors. This led to Americans becoming extremely angry and eager for war with Britain.
War Hawks
Southerners and Westerners who were eager for war with Britain. They had a strong sense of nationalism, and they wanted to takeover British land in North America and expand.
Andrew Jackson
General in the War of 1812 defeated the British at New Orleans (1815). Led US troops in numerous battles against Native Americans.
Hartford Convention
Meeting of Federalists near the end of the War of 1812 in which the party listed it's complaints against the ruling Republican Party.

federal projects, such as canals and roads, to develop the nation's transportation system
American System
Economic program advanced by Henry Clay that included support for a national bank, high tariffs, and internal improvements; emphasized strong role for federal government in the economy.
Monroe Doctrine
A statement of foreign policy which proclaimed that Europe should not interfere in affairs within the United States or in the development of other countries in the Western Hemisphere.
Gabriel's Rebellion
An 1800 uprising planned by Virginian enslaved people to gain their freedom. The plot was led by a blacksmith named Gabriel, but was discovered and ended.
Haitian Revolution
Toussaint l'Ouverture led this uprising, which in 1790 resulted in the successful overthrow of French colonial rule on this Caribbean island. This revolution set up the first black government in the Western Hemisphere and the world's second democratic republic (after the US).
