What do facial markings do?
-Affect physical appearance
-give each of us our individual look
What is a wrinkle?
Also can be a furrow or sulcus; a crevice in the skin bordered by adjacent elevations
What is a groove?
An elongated depression on a relatively level plane or surface
What is a fold?
An elongated prominence adjoining a surface
What are facial markings?
the characteristic lines that can be natural or acquired, consisting of wrinkles, grooves, cords and dimples of the face and neck

Those markings that most often develop throughout life as a result fo the repetitious use of certain muscles

What is the philtrum?
A natural facial marking that is a vertical groove located medially on the integumentary lip
What is the nasolabial fold?
A natural facial marking and the projection of the cheek adjacent to the corners of the mouth. May also be known as the smile lines. Extends from the superior part of the posterior margins of the wing of nose and the side of the mouth
What is the nasal sulcus?
A natural facial marking where the indentation of the cheek starts lateral to the wings; lies between the wings and the nasolabial fold
What is the oblique palpebral sulcus?
The natural facial marking that is a groove inferior from medial eye area, moving laterally downward
What is the angulus oris eminence?
A natural facial marking consisting of the prominence at the lateral end of the lips. found outside and slightly above the corner of the mouth
What is the angulus oris sulcus?
A natural facial marking and the groove at each end of the mouth; found immediately below each corner of the mouth at line of closure (cigarette holder)
What is the labiomental sulcus?
A natural facial makring and the junction of the lower fleshy lip and superior chin area. Appears as a transverse furrow.
What is the submental sulcus?
A natural facial marking which is the junction of the inferior chin and submandibular area; appears as an elongated, transverse furrow. Found under base of chin
What are dimples?
Natural facial markings; depressions of the lateral cheek or chin. round or elongated
How can age cause you to acquire facial markings?
-Loss of muscle mass
-Loss of skin elasticity
-Skin care techniques
What is the main environmental factor that affects facial markings most?
The sun. Excessive amounts can darken the skin, cause more lines and wrinkles, make the skin firmer and less supple
What environmental factors can induce acquired facial markings?
-Smoking
-Chemical exposure
How can muscle striation and action affect acquired markings?
repetitious use of muscles will create firmer, better developed muscles. However, if muscles are left unused, they can soften, sag and atrophy
How can position of the body affect acquired facial markings?
Gravity will cause skin to sag depending on where we are. Will be inferior if we are standing. Laying supine, it will be posterior and lateral.
How can condition of the body affect facial markings?
-Weight gain (stretch marks)
-Weight loss (sagging and wrinkles)
-Edema
-Emaciaton
-decomp
-Burns
-Drowning
-Accidents
What is the nasolabial sulcus?
An aquired facial marking which originates at the superior border of the wing of nose extending to the side of mouth
What are transverse frontal sulci?
Furrows crossing forehead- caused by manipulation of the occipitofrontalis muscle (acquired)
What are interciliary sulci?
vertical and/or transverse furrows between the eyebrows.
-Vertical ones are a result of contraction of the corrugator
-Transverse ones are from contraction of the procerus
(acquired)
What are optic facial sulci?
Furrows at the corners of the eye- aka crows feet (acquired)
What are the superior palpebral sulci?
Furrows of the superior borders of the upper eyelid (acquired)
What are the inferior palpebral sulci?
Furrow of attached border of the inferior eye (acquired)
What is the bucco-facial sulcus?
Acquired vertical furrow of the cheek
What is the mandibular sulcus?
Acquired furrow beneath the jawline that rises vertically on the cheek
What are labial sulci?
Aquired vertical furrows of the lip; extends from the red lip to fleshy lip
What are platysmal sulci?
Acquired transverse dipping furrow of the neck. Shallow and lateral
