Binocular depth cues
Depth information that requires both eyes.
Retinal disparity
Each eye sees a slightly different image; the brain compares them to judge distance.
Convergence
Your eyes move inward when looking at something close; the amount of inward movement signals depth.
Monocular depth cues
Depth information that works with just one eye.
Relative clarity
Clear objects appear closer; blurry objects seem farther away.
Relative size
Smaller objects look farther away if we know they’re normally the same size.
Texture gradient
Less detailed (smoother) textures appear farther away.
Linear perspective
Parallel lines look like they meet in the distance.
Interposition
If one object blocks another, we see the blocking object as closer.
Perceptual Constancies
We understand that objects stay the same shape, size, and color even when our viewing conditions change.
Apparent movement
Something looks like it’s moving even though it isn’t (like lights flashing in sequence).
