Ovaries
Female reproductive organs that produce ova.
Oogenesis
The production of female gametes in the ovaries.
Ovarian cortex
The region of the ovary where gametes are produced in follicles.
Ovarian medulla
The inner region of the ovary containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
Estrogens
Hormones secreted by the ovaries, including estradiol, estrone, and estriol.
Progesterone
A hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Inhibin
A hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Relaxin
A hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Uterine Tubes
Also called fallopian tubes, they connect the ovaries to the uterus.
Isthmus (Uterine Tube)
Connects the uterine tube to the uterus.
Ampulla (Uterine Tube)
The distal end that expands from the uterine tube, connecting to the infundibulum.
Infundibulum (Uterine Tube)
Connects to the ampulla and has fimbriae.
Fimbriae
Ciliated projections that cover the ovary at the end of the infundibulum.
Uterus
Also called the womb, located in the pelvis anterior to the rectum and posterior to the urinary bladder.
Body (Uterus)
The main portion of the uterus.
Fundus (Uterus)
The rounded region of the uterus superior to the entrance of the uterine tubes.
Cervix (Uterus)
The narrow neck of the uterus that opens to the vagina inferiorly.
Perimetrium
The outermost serous layer of the uterus.
Myometrium
The thick middle smooth muscle layer of the uterus.
Endometrium
The innermost mucous membrane layer of the uterus composed of simple columnar epithelium.
Vagina
The female copulatory organ and birth canal that extends from the cervix to the exterior of the body.
Hymen
An incomplete partition formed from mucosa near the vaginal orifice.
Vulva
Also called the female external genitalia.
Labia majora
Protective skin folds in the female external genitalia.
Labia minora
Thinner skin folds within the labia majora.
Vestibule
Enclosed within the labia minora, containing the urethral and vaginal orifices.
Clitoris
A small structure corresponding to the corpora cavernosa of the penis.
Perineum (Female)
The diamond-shaped region between the pubic arch, coccyx, and ischial tuberosities.
Mammary Glands
Modified sweat glands for milk production.
Areola
The pigmented area surrounding the nipple.
