Eschatology

- Christian teaching about the last things: heaven, hell, judgment, the second coming of Christ, and the kingdom of God. About God's ends for creation, ends both in terms of time and in terms of goals—God's good and final purposes for creation. (Pp. 215)

Eschatological Tension

the double aspect of last things, which are both already and not-yet (Pp. 217)

Already

The present-tense reality that began with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and continues right up to this present moment. (Pp. 217)

Not-yet

The future-tense reality of the kingdom to come in fullness, visibility, and power. (Pp. 217)

Overly Realized Eschatology

Forfeits future hope, discounting the fullness of the kingdom, which is not yet embodied among us (Pp. 218)

Premillennialism

Expects Christ to return before (pre-) the thousand years of Revelation. Premillennial theologies expect life to grow worse and worse as we draw near to the coming of Christ. (Pp. 219)

Postmillennialism

Looks for Christ's second coming after (post-) the millenium, understood as a time when Christ will reign from heaven through the power of the gospel. Postmillennial theology looks on the world with optimism, expecting things to grow better as we approach the millennium. (Pp. 219)

Amillennialism

Does not see the millennium in Revelation as a future thousand years. The millennium is read as a symbolic reference to the kingdom reign of Christ, a reign that is both already and not yet. (Pp. 219)

Eschatological Reservation

Acting in the knowledge that something is always reserved for the not-yet. Trains us in a poster of present humility, humility required by our confidence in the future. (Pp. 220)

Parousia

The Second Coming of Christ (Pp. 221)

Resurrection

Not reanimation or resuscitation, or about souls going to heaven. Instead, resurrectionis for whole people, body and soul in unity. (Pp. 222)

General Resurrection

we, like Jesus, will be raised from the dead to new life in new creation

Intermediate state

A life for the soul in the time between an individual's death and the day of resurrection. (Pp. 229)

Soul Sleep

Understands the dead to be like sleepers, not conscious until the resurrection day. (Pp. 230)

Hell

The end for those who would finally refuse God's living offer of salvation (Pp. 231)

Universalism

All will finally be saved (Pp. 231)

Postmortem Evangelism

An invitation to say yes to Jesus after one has died. (Pp. 232)

Annihilationism

The proposal that hell is not everlasting but will finally wither away to nothing. (Pp. 232)

Purgatory

A postmortem space in which God purges all that remains of sin for those who have died in Christ but are not yet holy. (Pp. 232)

Porneia

Sex deformed by sin. Sex contrary to God's good intentions.

It is sin against fidelity. It is visible, bodily behavior produced by hearts captive to sin. It is sex that rejects the power and leading of the Holy Spirit. It is sex that exploits. It is sex that is bought and sold.

1. I can expect to get married as my reward following rules.
