A core sentence (thesis statement) that summarizes the main points of a speech for the audience.

Required grammatical structure for a specific purpose statement

An infinitive phrase starting with "To" followed by a communication verb, target audience, and content topic (e.g., "To inform my classmates…").

Key guidelines for specific purpose content

It must be singular and focused, match the communication verb, be relevant to the audience, and remain unsaid during the speech.

Major formatting error to avoid in purpose and central idea statements

Phrasing either statement as a question rather than as a complete sentence or infinitive phrase.
