Targeted under fives and their families in the most deprived areas of England. Based on early intervention. Aim to improve health, education and employment prospects.
Academies
Originally designed to replace failing comprehensive schools in low income inner-city areas, they aim to drive up educational standards. Independent from local authority- could choose their own headteacher and develop their own curriculum. National curriculum required in core subjects.
Further education
Students in education grew steadily under Labour. Education maintenance allowance (EMA) introduced an attempt to reduce the class gap in further education
Higher education
Rapid increase in student numbers. Tuition fees required, however, free to students from low income families. Student grant was abolished and replaced by student loans.
