Preamble to the Constitution

Necessary and Proper Clause
(Article I, Section 8, Clause 18) allows Congress to make laws necessary and proper for executing its enumerated powers.
Full Faith and Credit Clause
(Article 4, Section 1) requires states to recognize proceedings from other states.
Supremacy Clause
(Article 6, Section 2) establishes that federal law takes precedence over state laws.
Free Exercise Clause
First Amendment provision that prohibits Congress from restricting the practice of religion.
Establishment Clause
First Amendment provision that prohibits Congress from establishing a national religion.
Due Process Clause

Limited Government
The principle that ensures no branch of government holds excessive power and that all individuals are subject to the law.
Checks and Balances
System that ensures no branch of government can overpower the others by allowing each branch to check the powers of the others.
Federalism
Political system where power is divided between the national and state governments.
Separation of Powers
The division of government responsibilities into distinct branches to prevent any one branch from exercising the core functions of another.
Popular Sovereignty
The principle that the authority of a state and its government is created and sustained by the consent of its people.
Individual Rights
Basic human rights that are inherent to all individuals, and not granted by the government.
