Limit line
A wide white line that shows the drivers where to stop before an intersection or crosswalk.
Right Turn Bike Lane Access
A driver can enter a bike lane within 200feet from the turn, after checking blind spots for bicyclists.
Right Turn Signal Timing
Start signaling about 100feet before the turn.
Right Turn Against a Red Light
Permitted after a complete stop unless there is a NO TURN ON RED sign.
Right Turn Against a Red Arrow
Not permitted; the driver must wait until the light changes to green before making the turn.
Dedicated Right Turn Lane
A lane that does not merge into another lane and allows for a right turn without stopping.
Two-way Center Left Turn Lane Entry
You must enter this lane within 200feet of the turn while respecting the right-of-way of existing vehicles.
Left Turn Steering Wheel Position
Keep wheels pointed straight ahead until it is safe to start the turn to prevent being pushed into oncoming traffic if hit from behind.
Left Turn Against a Red Light
Permitted only when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street, provided no signs prohibit it.
U-turn Visibility Requirement
Never make a U-turn when you cannot see clearly for 200feet in each direction.
U-turn in Residential Districts
Permitted if no vehicles are approaching within 200feet.
Safe Braking Distance
When stopping behind a vehicle, leave enough space to see their rear wheels.
Highway Merging Space Rule
Leave three seconds of space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
Highway Exit Signaling
Signal for five seconds (approximately 400feet) before you exit.
City Street Entering Traffic Gap
Requires a space of about half a block, which is approximately 150feet.
Highway Entering Traffic Gap
Requires a space of a full block, which is approximately 300feet.
Passing Visibility on Hills/Curves
The hill or curve should be at least one-third of a mile ahead to safely pass.
Passing Proximity Restriction
Do not pass within 100feet of an intersection, bridge, tunnel, railroad crossing, or hazardous area.
Parallel Parking Curb Distance
The vehicle must be parallel and within 18inches of the curb.
Straight Line Backing distance
Back in a straight line for three vehicle lengths while remaining within 3feet of the curb.
Downhill Hill Parking
Turn front wheels into the curb or right toward the side of the road.
Uphill Hill Parking
Turn front wheels away from the curb (left) and let the vehicle roll back until the wheel touches the curb.
Hill Parking with No Curb
Turn wheels to the right so the vehicle rolls away from the center of the road if brakes fail.
White Curb
Stop only long enough to pick up or drop off passengers.
Green Curb
Park for a limited time as indicated by signs or the curb itself.
Yellow Curb
Stop for loading/unloading passengers and freight; noncommercial drivers must usually stay with their vehicle.
Red Curb
No stopping, standing, or parking (except for buses in certain marked zones).
Blue Curb
Parking reserved for a disabled person or someone driving a disabled person with a special placard or license plate.
Fire Hydrant Parking Restriction
Never park within 15feet of a fire hydrant.
Crosswalk Parking Restriction
Never park within 20feet of an unmarked or marked crosswalk (15feet if a curb extension is present).
Freeway Emergency Stop Rule
Park completely off the pavement; a vehicle left for more than four hours may be removed.
Law Enforcement Stop Documents
The driver must produce a driver’s license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration.
California Immigration Status Privacy
State and local officers are prohibited from asking drivers or passengers about their immigration status.
