What are Alloys?
a mixture of a metal and other metals or non-metals
they have distinct properties compared to component elements
How are Alloys produced? What are the ions bound together by?
by adding one metallic element to another metallic element (or carbon) in the molten mixture
when the mixture solidifies, the result is a lattice in which different metal ions are scattered. The ions are bound together by their shared attraction to delocalized electrons
What is an interstitial alloy?
when elements with large differences in atomic/ionic radius form alloys, the smaller element is able to fit in the gaps between the larger ions forming the lattice.
What is an Substitutional Alloy?
caused as a result of metals with similar ionic radii and form a lattice
Why do alloys have different properties than the elements that make them up?
due to the different packing of the cations in the lattice
often leads to materials that are more chemically stable, stronger, and more resistant to corrosion
