Albuterol
short-acting beta-2 agonist; rescue for asthma/COPD; expect tachycardia.
Terbutaline
beta-2 agonist + blocks mast-cell hypersensitivity; can cause hyperglycemia.
Ipratropium (Atrovent)
anticholinergic, opens med/large airways.
Inhaler: shake, mouthpiece down, inhale through mouth, one spray per inhalation.
Spacer
chamber for poor coordination/kids.
Montelukast
leukotriene modifier (long-term control, NOT rescue).
Guaifenesin
expectorant; acetylcysteine
Decongestants
vasoconstrict nasal capillaries (pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine).
Antitussives
(dextromethorphan, codeine) suppress cough — don't use on productive coughs.
Steroids end in
sone; cause Cushingoid effects, infection risk, hyperglycemia, delayed healing, osteoporosis.
Try to keep steroids
H1 blocker
(diphenhydramine) for allergies/sedation; drowsy + anticholinergic SE.
H2 blockers
(-tidine) act on stomach (GI module).
