Student Safety Contract Copies
Two copies are provided: one signed copy must be submitted by both student and parent/guardian before participating in the lab, and the second copy is kept in the science notebook as a constant reminder.
Fume Hood
A ventilated enclosure used when working with volatile substances or poisonous vapors; students must never place their head inside it.
Chemical Waste Disposal Protocol
Method requiring that chemicals never be mixed in sink drains, insoluble materials (metals, matches, filter paper) be placed in proper waste containers, and labels on waste containers be checked twice before adding waste.
Fire Drill Procedure
Emergency procedure during a lab period requiring containers to be closed, and gas valves, fume hoods, and electrical equipment to be turned off.
Handling Sharp Instruments
Carrying knives and sharp tools with tips pointing down and away, cutting away from the body, grasping only by handles, and never attempting to catch falling sharp instruments.
Laboratory Goggles
Required eye protection that must be worn without exception any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used in the laboratory.
Contact Lenses Rule
Permitted in the lab only if adequate face and eye protection is provided by specially marked, non-vented safety goggles, and the instructor is informed.
Proper Laboratory Attire
Lab dress requiring long hair to be tied back, dangling jewelry and loose clothing to be secured, lab aprons to be worn, and shoes to completely cover the foot with no sandals allowed.
"Code one, Code one"
The emergency call phrase yelled out immediately to get the instructor's attention if a student or lab partner is hurt.
Chemical Splash Protocol
Immediate flushing of affected eyes or skin with running water from the eyewash station or safety shower for at least 20minutes and notifying the instructor immediately.
Broken Mercury Thermometers Protocol
Safety instruction specifying that spilled mercury from broken thermometers must not be touched and the instructor must be notified immediately.
Wafting
The instructor-demonstrated technique used to safely smell chemical vapors in the laboratory.
Unused Chemicals Rule
Safety rule specifying that unused chemicals must never be returned to their original containers.
Pipet Filling Method
The method of filling a pipet using a rubber bulb or pipet pump, strictly prohibiting mouth suction.
Diluting Strong Acids
Procedure requiring that acid always be added to water while swirling or stirring, paying close attention to the heat produced (particularly with sulfuric acid).
Handling Flammable Liquids
Dispensing flammable hazardous liquids over a pan to contain spills and keeping them away from open flames or sources of heat.
Carrying Glass Tubing
Carrying glass tubing, especially long pieces, in a vertical position to minimize the risk of breakage and injury.
Broken Glass Cleanup
Cleaning up broken glassware using a brush and dustpan (never bare hands) and placing it in the designated glass disposal container.
Glass Tubing in Stoppers
Method requiring glassware lubrication before insertion into a stopper, protecting hands with towels or cotton gloves, and bringing "frozen" glass to the instructor.
Wash Bottles
Containers that must be filled only with distilled water and used strictly as intended, such as for rinsing equipment or adding water.
Glassware Thermal Shock Rule
Instruction prohibiting the immersion of hot glassware in cold water because it may shatter.
Heating Test Tubes
Procedure for heating liquids in test tubes ensuring the open end of the test tube is never pointed at oneself or anyone else.
Testing Object Temperature
Determining if an object is hot by bringing the back of your hand close to it prior to grasping it, since hot and cold glass have the same visual appearance.
Hot Apparatus Placement
Placing hot apparatus on an insulating pad rather than directly on the laboratory desk, allowing sufficient time for it to cool before touching.
