1917, 1st non-violent movement by M. Gandhi protesting against forced indigo cultivation. Ghandhi gets arrested and eventually changes the law.

Chauri Chaura Incident

February 4 1922, piliced fired on protesters which lead to them burning of a police station killing many. Caused the non-cooperation movement to end.

Colombo/Central Bank Bombing

January 31 1996, Bank in capital was bombed by LTTE and killed 91 [people and injured over 1,400. Deadliest bombing of SL civil war.

Concert for Bangladesh

Agust 1 1971, concert held by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to raise money for victims of Bangladesh Liberation War.

Constitution of India

1950, replaced Gov. of India Act of 1935 and recognized India as a state with democratic republic. Longest constitution written.

Day of Direct Action

August 16 1946, All-India Muslim League wanted a separate for them when British left, caused riots. Proponed partiiton of Bengal and Pakistan.

Demolition of Babri Masjid

December 6 1992, the Vishva Hindu Parishad wanted to replace the 16th century mosque with a temple. Tnsions between both religions led to the forced demolition.

Dharasana Salt Workers Protest

May 1930, caused by boycott of Imperial salt tax. Despite harsh opposition by British protestors wanted to shut down salt factory. Broguht attention from the world to British brutality.

Emergency in India

India Declaration of Emergency

1975, Indira Gandhi and Fakruddin Ali Ahmed declared state of emergency until 1977 due to internal and externat threats to the state.

Gawkdal Bridge Massacre

January 21 1990, Indian troops fired at Kashmiri protesters on the bridge. Led to migration to the Pakistan Kashmir region.

December 1961, operation Vijay was an attack from India to the Portuguese to incorporate ___, Daman, Dui.

Gorkhaland Movement

1980’s, Gorkhas in Darjeeling (West Bengal) consider themselves to be ethnically and culturally different, which is why they seek to make a separate state. Gov. of India gave in on 1988 and made the Darjeeling Ghorka Hill Council which is a semi-autonomous local gov.

Government of India Act

1935, British parliamentary act gave some autonomy to British India by spliting it into provinces. This gave more power and autonomy to state governments. It did not accomplish much due to WII starting in 1939.

Hyderabad/Operation Polo

September 1948, Capital city of Telangana, sitting on the Deccan Plateau. While India was seeking Independence _________ didn’t give in. They wanted a separate state for themselves. Military made them surrender in an operation that lasted 5 days.

Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami

December 26 2004, 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia, which caused a tsunami. Killed over 200,000 in countries surrounding Indian Ocean.
