Correlation
A statistical procedure used to describe the strength and direction of the relationship between two factors.
Correlation Coefficient
A strategy for quantifying the relationship between variables.
Pearson's r
A measure of the linear relationship of two factors measured on an interval or ratio scale.
Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient
A measure of the direction and strength of the linear relationship between one continuous factor and a dichotomous factor.
Linear Regression
A statistical procedure used to determine the equation of a regression line to predict values of one factor based on known values of a second factor.
Null Hypothesis
The hypothesis that there is no linear relationship between the variables.
Alternative Hypothesis
The hypothesis that indicates the presence of a relationship between variables (either non-directional or directional).
Residuals
The distance between the observed y-value and predicted y-value in regression analysis.
Coefficient of Determination
Proportion of the total variance explained by the predictor variable.
Homoscedasticity
The assumption that for each possible x-value, the y-variable has the same variance in the population.
