Variable

Independent variable
The variable that is changed in an experiment.
Dependent variable
The variable that is measured in an experiment.
Controlled variables
Variables that are kept the same in an experiment.
Inquiry question
A question that includes controlled variables and is used for the experiment.
Valid experiment
An experiment where the independent variable is truly showing effect

Materials found in nature.
Artificial materials
Materials that humans have made.
Gas
A state of matter that has no fixed shape and no fixed volume.
Liquid
A state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
Metal
A material that is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity.
Plastic
A synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be molded into shape while soft and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form.
Powder
A substance in the form of fine, dry particles.
Solid
A substance that has a definite shape and volume.
Solution
A mixture of two substances that remain mixed.
Solvent
A liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent to form a solution.
Suspension
A mixture in which the substances separate out after some time into different layers.
Physical changes
Changes that do not make a new sort of matter, and the same sort of matter is just rearranged.
Chemical changes
Changes in which the material has different properties after the change.
Capillary action
