Communication (Etymology)

Derived from the Latin word 'common' meaning 'belonging to many' and 'communico' meaning 'to confer with other'.

Sender

Also known as the encoder; decides on the message to be sent.

Medium

The immediate form which a message takes.

Channel

Responsible for the delivery of the chosen message form.

Feedback

Also known as decoder; responsible for extracting/decoding message.

Context

Acts as the environment surrounding the communication.

Noise

Inhibits the transmission of a message; can be internal or external.

Verbal Message

Logical and structure; refers to what we say.

Non verbal Message

Includes body language; refers to how we show it.

Psychological Noise

Mental interference.

Physical and Environmental Noise

External disturbances.

Physiological Noise

Part of the body that causes interference.

Semantic Noise

Meaning barriers.

Cultural Noise

Different words or values that can lead to misunderstanding.

One way communication.
