Excessive/Impacted cerumen - Pharm

  • Carbamide peroxide 6.5% in anhydrous gelatin

    • Only FDA approved nonprescription product to soften earwax

    • 5-10 drops are instilled into the affected ear

      • Solution should remain in EAC for several minutes for effective softening of earwax

      • Use a otic bulb to gently rinse any remaining cerumen afterwards

    • May be administered twice daily for up to 4 days

    • Patients should contact a primary care provider if symptoms persist after 4 days of use, if adverse effects develop, or if the presence of infection is suspected

      • ADR: include pain, rash, irritation, tenderness, redness, discharge, and dizziness

Water clogged ears - Pharm

  • Isopropyl alcohol 95% in anhydrous gelatin 5%

    • Instill 4-5 drops in the affected ear

    • Leave in place for 1-2 minutes

Exclusion Criteria

  • Signs of infection (irritation or rash)

  • Pain associated with ear discharge

  • Bleeding or signs of trauma

  • Presence of ruptured tympanic membrane

  • Ear surgery within prior 6 weeks

  • Tympanostomy tubes present

  • Incapable of following proper instructions

  • Hypersensitivity to recommended agents

  • >12 years old

  • Worsening of condition after attempted self-treatment
