THE REST OF THE STORY OF JESUS CHRIST
What are the three main discourses recorded in the Bible?
Sermon on the Mount Discourse (Matt. 5-7); the Olivet Discourse (Matt. 24-25); and the Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17).
Which disciple objects to Jesus’ washing of his feet?
Peter
What principle does Jesus teach Peter concerning the necessity of his feet being washed?
Jesus’ reaction was to point out that Peter did not have all the information concerning this event (vs. 7) and that if he would not allow this, then Peter had no part with Him (vs. 8).
A key to harmonizing the fact that all sins of a believer are forgiven at salvation (Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 43:25) with his continual need to confess sins after salvation After Peter requests that Jesus wash his whole body, Jesus responds by informing Peter that he only needed his feet “washed” because he was already “washed” wholly (vs. 10; pun intended ).
How do we know that “Foot Washing” should not be considered an ordinance of the church?
the symbolism of the event. The second reason deals with its compliance. The final reason concerns its practice in the early church.
Identify the following actions recorded in John 13 with the proper disciple (some answers may be used more than once).
Objected to Jesus' washing his feet- Peter
Given a piece of dipped bread - Judas
Silently requested the identity of Jesus' betrayer- Peter
Discovered the identity of Jesus' betrayer- John
How does the “new commandment” differ from the “old commandment” of Lev. 19:18?
While the “old commandment” of Lev. 19:18 instructed Jews to love those in close proximity to them (“neighbors”), the “new” one demanded love for all believers regardless of proximity!
What questions were asked by the disciples concerning Jesus’ coming departure and who asked them?
Peter asks about Jesus’ destination
Thomas asks for direction
Philip asks for visible confirmation of the Father
Thaddeus asks about Jesus’ future, private manifestation
What does “mansions” mean in John 14:2?
“a dwelling place” (like a condo or apartment today)
What does Jesus tell Philip will glorify the Father?
Jesus then describes how the Father will be glorified through the disciples as He was through Himself
What is an interesting aspect concerning Jesus’ declaration that the Father would send “another Comforter”?
Pertains to the adjective “another”. Meaning here “another of the same kind”
What new and unique feature of this dispensation does the Holy Spirit bring to the Church?
The permanent and universal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in all believers
How does Jesus tell Thaddeus that He would be manifested to them?
What word contains the key to understanding Jesus’ analogy of the vine?
is found within the meaning of “abide” (μέν ): “to remain” or “to stay”.
What does abiding in the vine produce?
Fruit
love for other believers
enmity with the world
What kind of animosity would the disciples soon face because of their association with Jesus?
be hated by the world, excommunicated from the synagogue, and killed by the Jews because of their relationship with Jesus.
What are some responsibilities the Holy Spirit would perform when sent from the Father?
First, the Holy Spirit will comfort the disciples
Secondly, the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment
Jesus will reveal more to the disciples through the Holy Spirit
To what event does Jesus liken His death, burial, and resurrection and why?
to childbirth
For whom does Jesus pray?
prayer for Himself to be glorified; prayer for His disciples; and prayer for all future believers
For what does Jesus pray?
Jesus prays for our unification & prays for our eternal habitation with Him in heaven
How many trials was Jesus placed in and which ones does John record?
three Jewish trials, three Roman trials. Of Jewish, John records the first two while Matthew records the third
(Jewish; 1: Jesus is placed on trial before Annas, 2: Jesus is interrogated by Caiaphas, 3: Jesus is placed on trial before the Sanhedrin. Then Roman; 1: before Pilate at praetorium “judgment hall,” 2: before Herod, 3: back to Pilate)
What were Peter and John’s actions during Jesus’ trials?
The only two disciples recorded as following Jesus to His first trial were Peter and John John still accompanied Jesus in the room during trial while Peter cautiously waited outside & when asked by a little girl if he was a disciple of Jesus, he responded in the negative
How did Pilate try to release Jesus?
Jesus is declared innocent by Pilate and attempts to substitute Him for Barabbas Since Pilate‟s announcement of Jesus as innocent was not enough to appease the Jews, he then determines to appeal to their own tradition of loosing one prisoner prior to the Passover
What was the Roman process of scourging and crucifixion?
Scourging: After being tied naked to a post, the individual would be whipped with an instrument known as a “cat of nine tails.” This whip had nine endings full of sharp instruments intended to cut, tear, and rip the flesh off a prisoner. Although the Jews limited a whipping to 39 times, it is not recorded that the Romans had a limit; therefore, we have no idea the exact number which Jesus had to endure
Crucifixion: Crucifixion was a form of execution generally used by Rome to punish those guilty of capital offenses. It involved tying or nailing an individual to a cross in such a way as to suspend the body by the arms, resulting in a slow suffocation of the prisoner. Often the crucified man would use his legs for support, thus slowing the process of death. There are records of men who hung on the cross for up to nine days awaiting inevitable death. When the soldiers wanted the condemned to die faster, they would break his legs with a heavy mallet, making it impossible for the prisoner to support himself.
How did the Jews react to Pilate’s pronouncement of Jesus as their “King”?
Amazingly, these Jews transferred all allegiance from Israel to Rome by declaring that their only king was Caesar
Who does John record as present at Jesus’ crucifixion and what conversation transpired between Him and them?
Jesus‟ clothes are divided among four soldiers Jesus delegates care for his mother to John the apostle Mary (His mother), Mary (His aunt and mother of James and John), Mary (of Magdala whom He cast out seven demons), and John the apostle. In this address Jesus delegates the care of Mary to John (vs. 27) and affinity from John to Mary
What is the significance in the confirmation of Jesus’ death?
This prevented the soldiers from breaking Jesus‟ legs, thereby fulfilling the prophecies of Ps. 34:20 and Zech. 12:10.
What is the timeline of Jesus’ revelation of Himself after the resurrection as recorded by John?
Jesus is found missing from Joseph of Arimathea‟s tomb
Peter and John the apostle verify that the tomb is empty
Jesus reveals Himself to Mary Magdalene
Jesus appears before all the disciples except Thomas
Jesus appears before Thomas
What was Peter’s reaction to the Savior’s presence on the shore while they were fishing?
Peter put on his shirt and jumped into the water to go see Jesus
In John 21, what is the significance of Jesus and Peter’s conversation on the shore?
First Peter‟s level of commitment to Jesus
The direct grammatical context of this passage demonstrates that it was because Jesus wanted to raise the “love level” of Peter toward Him.
Second to his occupation.
Peter‟s occupation was going to transform from “fisherman” to “fisher of men” and these sheep would be future believers
What news does Jesus give Peter at the end of John’s gospel account?
he comments that he was the one to whom Jesus and Peter were talking about (vs. 24) and that he only recorded a small fraction of Jesus‟ actions while upon the earth
