Integumentary System
The organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage, including loss of water, against UV radiation, and infections.
Epidermis
The top layer of the skin composed of stratified squamous epithelial tissue.
Dermis
The layer of skin beneath the epidermis that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
Hypodermis
Also known as the subcutaneous layer; composed of loose, fatty connective tissue that connects the skin to muscle or bone.
Melanocytes
Spider-shaped epithelial cells found in the bottom layers of the epidermis that produce the pigment melanin.
Melanin
A pigment produced by melanocytes that protects the skin against harmful UV rays.
Sudoriferous Glands
Sweat glands responsible for the secretion of sweat.
Sebaceous Glands
Oil glands that produce sebum to lubricate skin and hair.
Keratin
A protein that makes up hair and nails, providing strength and protection.
Lines of Cleavage
Tension lines in the skin that are important for surgical procedures to ensure quicker healing.
Decubitus Ulcers
Also known as bedsores, formed when blood supply to the skin is restricted for a prolonged time.
Nail Matrix
The area where new nail cells are produced, leading to nail growth.
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Sweat glands located primarily in the armpits and genital areas, producing sweat that can cause body odor.
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Merocrine sweat glands that are abundant and often found on the palms, soles of feet, and forehead.
Dermal Papillae
Wavy boundary layer between the epidermis and dermis responsible for fingerprints.
Stratum Basale
The basal layer of the epidermis where cells are constantly dividing.
Stratum Corneum
The outermost layer of the epidermis, composed of dead keratinized cells.
Stratum Lucidum
A thin layer of translucent cells found only in thick skin, such as palms and soles.
Stratum Granulosum
The layer of the epidermis where cells begin to flatten and accumulate keratin granules.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Skin cancer arising from uncontrolled division of cells in the stratum basale.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Skin cancer resulting from uncontrolled division of cells in the stratum spinosum.
Melanoma
A serious form of skin cancer characterized by uncontrolled division of melanocytes.
