Characterization

The process of revealing the personality of a character.

Indirect characterization

Readers have to use their own judgement to decide what a character is like.

Static character

One who does not change much in the course of the story

Dynamic character

One who changes as a result of the story’s events

flat character

Has only one or two traits, can be described in a few words. Such character has no depth

Round character

Had many different character traits which sometimes contradict to one another.

Stock character

Appears so often in literature that his or her nature is instantly recognized

Clichê

An expression that has grown stale and flat as a result of overuse ex slept like a log

Colloquial language

Type of language used in everyday speech but not in formal speech or writing. Gives work a conversational, familiar tone.

Conflict

Problem that the characters struggle to resolve

Internal conflict

Conflict character has within themselves

External conflict

Conflict character has with another character, an outside force, or society

Man vs man

Character in a book struggles with another character in a book. This can be arguments, conflicting desires, opposing goals

Man vs self

When a character suffers with moral dilemmas, emotional challenges or desires he or she deems unsavory. Conflict is within own characters soul or conscience

Man vs nature

All characters in book are good guys and the conflict is between all the people and nature that are out of the characters control

Man vs society

When the character is repressed by society and not by a specific character

Man vs fantasy, supernatural, technology

Type of conflict found in specific genres of literary style. When the character comes up against ghosts, robots, divine forces. Main character must call upon their strength to defeat the enemy

Connotation

Feelings and ideas that come to be associated with a word over time; the implied suggested meaning. Can involve ideas emotions or attitudes.

Consonance

Repetition of consonant sounds within and at the end of words

Denotation

Precise literal dictionary meaning of a word devoid of any emotion attitude or color.

Dialect

Way of speaking that is characteristic of a particular region or group of people. Dialects may differ in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar. Authors use it to help establish setting and develop characters

Diction

Word choice; the clearness and effectiveness of the authors words. The words authors use to create sensations or moods.
