Flight Service Specialists at an FIC

• Conduct pilot briefings

• Accept and process flight plans

• Communicate in-flight information

• Relay ATC clearances

• Assist aircraft in emergency situations

• Provide alerting services and search for VFR aircraft

• Monitor NAVAIDS

• Issue notices to pilots on airport conditions, NAVAID serviceability, and surface weather reports

• Perform surface weather observations (at some locations)

Flight Service Specialist at an FSS

• Provide AAS and RAAS

• Control vehicles

• Accept and process flight plans

• Assist aircraft in emergency situations

• Provide alerting services and search for VFR aircraft

• Monitor NAVAIDs

• Perform surface weather observations

• Create FDEs

Apron Advisory

• Assign gates

• Issue pushback instructions (allow planes to back away from their gate, so they can taxi to the runway)

• Provide advisory info on other aircraft and vehicles operating on the apron

Clearance Delivery

• Issue IFR clearances for IFR aircraft

• Provide pertinent airport info to IFR and VR aircraft

• Create, amend, and delete FDE strips

• Forward the FDE to the ground controller to provide them with the aircraft’s flight information

• Answer or initiate phone calls

• Coordinate with various agencies

• Perform various clerical tasks

Ground Controller

• Issue IFR clearances for IFR aircraft

• Provide pertinent airport info to IFR and VR aircraft

• Create, amend, and delete FDE strips

• Forward the FDE to the ground controller to provide them with the aircraft’s flight information

• Answer or initiate phone calls

• Coordinate with various agencies

• Perform various clerical tasks

• Issue airport information to aircraft

• Issue taxi authorization to aircraft

• Issue authorization for vehicle movements

• Coordinate with tower controllers

Tower Controller

• Issue takeoff and landing clearances

• Pass traffic

• Coordinate with the ground controller and the ACC controller (could be terminal or enroute)

• Provide information services

• Provide alerting services

Terminal Controllers

• Issue various clearances and instructions

• Receive arrivals and hand off departures as dictated by procedures

• Pass traffic

• Provide weather information

• Issue updated information as it’s received

• Coordinate with other tower controllers, as well as enroute controllers and tower controllers

• Provide alerting services

Enroute Controllers

• Issue various clearances and instructions

• Provide arrival information

• Pass traffic

• Provide weather information

• Issue updated information as it’s received

• Coordinate with other enroute controllers, as well as tower and terminal controllers

• Provide alerting services
