Epithelial Tissue
A type of tissue that covers the body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Single layer of flat cells; allows rapid diffusion; found in lung alveoli and lining blood vessels.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Single layer of cube-shaped cells; involved in secretion and absorption; found in kidneys and ducts.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Single layer of tall cells; functions in active transport, absorption, and secretion; found in the lining of the stomach and intestines.
Goblet Cell
A specialized epithelial cell that secretes mucus.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Multiple layers of flat cells; provides protection from friction; found in the lining of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina.
Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Contains keratin; provides protection from desiccation; found in the epidermis of the skin.
Transitional Epithelium
A type of tissue that allows for stretching without tearing; found in the lining of the urinary bladder.
Pseudostratified Epithelium
Appears layered but is not; often ciliated; found in the respiratory tract and male reproductive system.
Exocrine Gland
Glands that secrete products onto a free surface, such as the skin or the lumen of an organ.
Endocrine Gland
Glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.
Merocrine Secretion
A type of exocrine secretion where only the apical portion of the cell is released.
Holocrine Secretion
A type of exocrine secretion where the entire cell disintegrates to release its contents.
Glandular Epithelial Tissue
Specialized epithelial tissue that forms glands responsible for secretion.
Connective Tissue
Tissue that supports, binds, and protects other tissues; often found beneath epithelial tissue.
Basement Membrane
A thin layer of fibrous material that anchors epithelial tissue to underlying structures.
Cilia
Hair-like structures on cells that help move substances across the cell surface.
Microvilli
Small, finger-like projections that increase the surface area for absorption.
Secretory Acini
Clusters of cells in glands that produce and secrete substances.
