Frederick Douglass
Born into slavery at a very young age, reveals his character as very determined and courageous especially since he fought against it.

He was an overseer where Frederick was enslaved, he was explained as a very miserable alcoholic, he was very cruel and violent to the slaves.

While his real name isn’t revealed, he had explained him as a cruel man. That often-found joy in whipping the slaves.

She had a darker skin tone than her parents but was a very loving and devoted woman. Even walking hours at night showing her love for Frederick, even after long days of work.

The Great House Farm
One of the largest slave plantations in Maryland that Douglass started working on.
Conflict of family separation
Douglass was separated from his mother at a young age while he never even knew his father. This conflict is man vs. society since this was a very common thing for enslaved family’s, this issue never got resolved.
Conflict of cruelty on the plantation
Douglass explains the very cruel and brutal treatment and conditions the slaves were in. This conflict is man vs man, since it is the overseers and slave masters who are the issue, which does not get resolved.
Corruption (Theme)
Corruption is seen as the slave owners separate Douglass’s family and control the slaves on the plantation through cruelty.

Douglass was not told his age, since they kept this information from the slaves which dehumanizes Douglass.
Separated from family (plot)
Douglass never met his dad, and they took his mom away from him to work on another plantation miles away.
Rarely seeing his mother (Plot)
As his mother was taken away on another farm, Douglass missed out on a true family experience growing up. Leaving him to feel unloved and worthless.

Frederick describes this farm as a huge profiting plantation, with cruel overseers and master.
Describing overseer’s (Plot)
Throughout his experiences witnessing brutal beatings from the overseers. Expressing the pleasure and joy they find in hurting these people.
Sorrow songs (Plot)
Describes very sorrowful songs the enslaved people sang on the way to the Great House Farm, which revealed their pain, knowing the brutality they will soon endure.
