Joint
Where two or more bones meet
Main types of Joints
Fibrous, Cartilaginous, Synovial
Fibrous Joint
Held together by fibrous material, no joint cavity
ex. Cranium sutures, tooth sockets, tibiofibular joints, interosseous (between length of ulna-radius)
Cartilaginous Joints
Joined by cartilage, no joint cavity
ex. vertebral disks, pubis symphysis, epiphyseal plates
Synovial Joints
Fluid filled joint cavity, has articulation
ex. shoulder, wrist, knee, thumb
Spheroidal Joint
aka ball and socket joint
Ball at one bone fits into socket of another
Triaxial
ex. humerus in glenoid cavity (hip)
Arthrodial Joint
aka Gliding joint
Connects flat/slightly curved bone surfaces that glide
Non-axial
ex. between tarsals, among carpals
Ginglymus Joint
aka hinge joint
Convex part of one bone fits into concave part of another
Uniaxial
ex. joint between ulna + humerus
Trochoid
aka pivot joint
Rounded part of one bone fits into groove of another
ex. joint between C1-C2
Saddle Joint
Not rotation, movement in two planes
Flexion/extension + abduction/adduction
Biaxial
ex. capo-metacarpal articulation of thumb
Ellipsoid Joint
Biaxial
ex. knuckle joints, wrist joints
