4 stages of wheel throwing
center, open, pull, shape
what is centering
it is the first step to creating a piece on the wheel, it helps align the clay to the wheel and creates a foundation of the piece
what is opening
it is the process of creating a hole with your fingers to create an even thickness in the base and in the walls so you can start the next step
what is pulling
it is the process of using your hands to pull up at the clay wall to make them taller and form a cylinder
what is shaping
it is the process of molding the clay cylinder to a different projected shape to create a piece of pottery
what is hard about centering
it is difficult to create a compressed, symmetrical mound of clay without the clay moving you around with the wheel
what is hard about opening
it is difficult finding the middle of the mound that is spinning and pushing your finger into it, even harder with nails
what is hard about pulling
it is difficult to create even walls with consistent pressure and slow hand movements
what is hard about shaping
it is difficult to get the correct angle to shape the clay so it will be different than a cylinder
what does centered clay look like
it looks like a mound of clay that when spinning is completely even and in the middle of the plastic bat
how do you center clay
by compressing your hands together and creating a mound of clay that does not move, it also includes coning which is making the clay move up into a cone shape then slowly pressing it back down to become a mound again (gets rid of air bubbles)
how to pull clay walls
by using one hand on the inside and the other on the outside to support, press your hands together and pull in an upwards motion starting from the bottom and working your way to the top, do this multiple times
what is incising
a design that is formed by cutting or carving shallow lines into the clay at a leather hard consistency
what is applique
applying (slip and score) low relief or shallow shapes to leather hard clay
what is piercing
cutting holes into leather hard ceramic work to create various shapes and patterns
what is mocha diffusion
it is a reaction with acid (vinegar) and alkali (slip) to create intricate veined patterns
what is printmaking
it is carving a custom stamp or design into linoleum and pressing it into leather hard clay
wax resist
using wax to prevent slip or glaze from adhering to a clay surface to keep a certain part bare, can be done during leather hard, bone dry, or bisque ware phase
what is silk printing
an image that is created by being printed onto clay with silkscreen (leather hard, bone dry, bisque ware)
what is Bubble glazing
a glaze technique that involves blowing bubbles in glaze and printing onto a bisque fired piece
what is mishima glaze inlay
drawing by inlaying a glaze or underglaze of contrasting color into lines incised in leather hard clay (opposite of sgraffito)
what is chip glazing
applying dried, broken pieces of glaze to wet glaze to create a specked effect
what is glaze trailing
using an applicator to apply glaze to create designs and details on bisque fired clay
what is marble glazing
creating a marbled effect on clay with underglaze, done on bisqueware
what is tape resist
using tape to resist glaze from spreading to other areas to create geometric patters and designs, done on leather hard, bone dry, or bisque ware
