What is assumed when a sonographer refers to directional anatomy?
The person is assumed to be in the anatomic position.
What does cephalic mean?
Toward the head.
What does caudal mean?
Toward the feet or lower end of the body.
Why is the anatomic position important?
It provides the standard reference position for describing anatomical direction and relationships.
What are scan planes?
Planes used to establish the direction the ultrasound beam enters the body and the anatomical portion visualized from that direction.
What are the three most common scanning planes?
Sagittal/longitudinal, transverse, and coronal.
What is another name for the sagittal plane?
The longitudinal plane.
What is the midsagittal plane?
A plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves.
What is the transverse plane?
A cross-sectional plane that produces a view across the body.
What is the coronal plane?
A plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Why are scan planes important?
They establish the direction of the ultrasound beam and determine which anatomical portion is visualized.
