Achieved status
A position that is obtained in one’s lifetime.
Ascribed Status
A position that is fixed at birth or unchangeable.
4 types of social structure
status, role. institution, group
Role
Set of norms specifying the rights and obligations associated with a status.
Role strain
Incompatible role demands that develop within a single status.
Role conflict
Incompatible role demands develop because of multiple statuses.
Role exit
process of disengagement from a role that is central to one’s self-identity.
Institution
An enduring social structure that meets basic human needs.
5 main institutions
Government, economics, religion, education, and family.
Group
2 or more people who identify with and interact with one another on a regular basis.
Primary group
long-term in nature, often smaller, close social bonds, social/emotional sharing.
Ex. Families
Secondary group
More variation, often larger, task/goal oriented, less social/ emotional sharing, some have definite and point, can be less fulfilling.
Culture
The total way of life shared by members of a society.
