Federalism
A system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units.
Egalitarianism
The belief in human equality, especially with respect to social, political, and economic rights.
Civil Rights
Rights that require government action to ensure equal treatment and prohibit discrimination based on characteristics such as race, gender, and disabilities.
Civil Liberties
Basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed, often protected from government interference.
Disparate Impact
A legal doctrine that refers to policies that, while neutral on their face, disproportionately affect a protected group.
Disparate Treatment
A legal claim whereby individuals are treated differently based on prohibited characteristics, such as race or gender.
14th Amendment
An amendment to the US Constitution that provides equal protection under the law and prohibits discrimination.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
A landmark piece of legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
Political Inequality
Disparities in power or influence among individuals or groups in a political system.
Voting Rights
Legal rights that protect the ability of individuals to participate in elections.
