What is MacConkey agar selective for?
used for growth/isolation of gram negative bacteria
What is te differential character that MacConkey agar provides?
How do you perform a quadrant streak technique?
Use a sterile bacteriologic loop to remove small amount of bacterial colony from culture plate
Hold loop horizontally against surface of the agar to avoid contamination
lightly streak inculation loop over one quarter of the plate usign a back and forth motion
Pass the loop through flame and allow to cool
Do not grab more bacteria, place the inoculating loop at the end of your first quarter and extended the streak outwards into a new quadrant using the same back and forth motion
Pass your loop through the flame and allow to cool once more
Do this same process two more times and you should have four different quadrants in total that have started from the first quadrant
What is alpha hemolysis?
a partial hemolysis that creates a band of greenish/slimy discoloration around the bacteria
What is beta-hemolysis?
a complete hemolysis that creates a clear zone around the bacterial colony
What is gamma hemolysis?
a hemolysis that produces no change in the appearance of the medium and has no hemolysis around the colonies
What hemolysis is called “double zone hemolysis”?
delta hemolysis
What are Rapid Vet-H kits used for?
used for crossmatching a donor and recipient to make sure they are compatible for a blood transfusion
T/F major crossmatches need to be done in patient who have never had a blood transfusion
false
What card test is the rapid vet-h (canine DEA)?
It is a blood typing test used to test for DEA 1.1 antigen for blood tranfusions
Is this patient a good candidate for a transfusion? (add pic)
Yes, this patient would be good because their test is DEA 1.1 positive. In the card it shows agglutination on the positive control and patient test which means this patient is a good candidate and has the DEA 1.1 antigen needed for a blood transfusion.
In an emergency could this patient be used to give a blodo transfusion to a dog who have never had a transfusion?
What are the gram stains in order?
Crystal Violet
Gram’s Iodine
Acetone
Safranin
