anti divorce - Marks Gospel
‘what god has brought together let no man divide… anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her’. This shows that anyone who divorces and remarries is viewed the same as someone who commits adultery, as even if the marriage is legally dissolved it is still viewed as valid in God’s eyes. The 7th commandment is ‘thou shall not commit adultery’, so therefore divorcing and remarrying is considered a violation of God’s commandment.
anti divorce - Matthews gospel
‘so then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate’. This shows that marriage is seen as a sacrament and is binding until death, as Christians believe that marriage is planned by God so divorce is going against God’s will.
anti divorce - Genesis
‘and God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth’. This shows that one of God’s main aims of marriage is to create a stable and loving environment to raise children. Divorce goes against this, as it breaks apart the family and can disrupt the nurturing environment that a child needs.
pro divorce - Corinthians
‘A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband’. This shows that whilst divorce is mainly not encouraged, God understands that separation may happen. In this quote, Paul offers a path that allows women to separate from their husband while still honouring their faith.
pro divorce - John
‘love one another just as god loves you’. In this quote, Jesus is encouraging the kind of love that God gives, which is patient and kind. If a marriage is no longer these things, then staying in the marriage doesn’t reflect God-like love and in some cases, divorce may actually be an act of love as it will provide a happier future for both people.
pro divorce - non quote
There are many laws in the bible that wouldn’t be accepted now as they are outdated and society has changed, for example slavery and capital punishment. Things that weren’t acceptable then are acceptable now, so we shouldn’t be restricted by ancient standards.
