• Perform hand hygiene and explain the procedure to the resident.
• Provide privacy; have the resident sit with the forearm supported, palm up, at heart level, and roll up the sleeve about 5 inches above the elbow.
• Apply the cuff: Select the appropriate cuff size, align it above the elbow (arrows toward the brachial artery), and secure it.
• Clean your stethoscope (earpieces and diaphragm); locate the brachial artery with your fingertips and place the diaphragm over it.
• Inflate the cuff to 160–180 mmHg then slowly deflate until the pulsation disappears.
• Remove the cuff and record the blood pressure accurately (ensuring the readings are within acceptable limits).
• Place a call light within reach, maintain respectful interactions, and perform hand hygiene.
