Quantitative Research
A study that uses numbers as data and statistical analysis to measure relationships or differences between variables.
Qualitative Research
A study that collects data (words, observations) to understand context, experiences, or perceptions.
Descriptive Research
Research that answers 'what', 'who', 'when', 'where', and 'how' but not 'why' something occurs.
Exploratory Research
Research aimed at gaining an initial understanding and identifying actual problems for further study.
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for a phenomenon, used as a basis for further investigation.
Sampling
The process of selecting participants for research, can be large for quantitative (30+) or small for qualitative (10-20).
Structured Data
Data that is organized in a fixed format, often used in quantitative research.
Flexible Approach
A research method that allows for changes in questions or methods during data collection, typical in qualitative research.
Inductive Research
Research that develops theories based on qualitative data without testing hypotheses.
Causality
The relationship between cause and effect, a primary focus in explanatory research.
Field Notes
Information collected during observations, critical in qualitative research.
Data Analysis
The process of interpreting collected data to identify themes or patterns.
Statistical Analysis
The process of applying statistical techniques to data, common in quantitative studies.
Bias
Systematic errors that can skew research results, typically minimized through controlled methodologies.
Narrative Data
Data that provides a comprehensive and deep insight, explaining 'why' and 'how' something occurs.
Saturation
The point in qualitative research when no new information is being discovered; data collection can cease.
