John Redmond
Leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party (Home Rule Party) who encouraged enlisting in WWI to secure Home Rule.
Edward Carson
Unionist leader who opposed Home Rule, fearing it would be "Rome Rule," and organized the UVF.
Third Home Rule Bill (1912)
A bill introduced because the Liberals needed Redmond’s support; the House of Lords could only delay it for 2 years.
Ulster Covenant
A petition signed by 200,000 unionists to protest against the Home Rule Bill.
UVF (1913)
The Ulster Volunteer Force, a paramilitary group formed to resist Home Rule by force if necessary.
Larne Gun-running (1914)
An operation that brought 35,000 guns to arm the UVF.
Irish Volunteers (1913)
A nationalist paramilitary group formed in response to the UVF to defend Home Rule.
National Volunteers
The group of approximately 100,000 men who followed Redmond and supported the WWI effort.
36th Ulster Division
A British military division joined by many Unionists during WWI.
IRB
The Irish Republican Brotherhood, a secret group led by Pearse and Clarke that planned the 1916 Rising.

The British gunboat used to shell Dublin city during the 1916 Rising.
Cumann na mBan
An Irish republican women's paramilitary organization formed in 1914.
Sinn Fnn Fin
Political party that won 73 seats in 1918 and established Dil ireann.

The location where the conflict of the War of Independence officially started.
