What is Business Continuity?

Minimizing downtime by identifying potential failures and taking steps to avoid those failures and to reduce their effects.

What is High Availability?

A system design protocol and associated implementation that ensures a certain degree of operational continuity during a given measurement period.

What are some components that are made redundant to make a server more fault-tolerant?

Disks (RAID, hot spares), power supplies (redundant), and network cards (redundant).

What is a Power Supply?

A mechanical device that converts AC power into clean DC power and includes fans for cooling.

What type of system should have redundant power supplies?

Systems that cannot afford to be down.

What does Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory do?

ECC memory corrects a single failed bit in a 64-bit block.

What is NIC teaming?

Grouping together two or more physical NICs into one single logical NIC for network fault tolerance and increased bandwidth through load balancing.

What is a computer cluster?

A group of linked computers that work together as one computer.

What are the two most popular forms of clusters?

Failover clusters and load-balancing clusters.

What is a failover cluster?

A set of independent computers that work together to increase the availability of services and applications. If one node fails, another begins to provide services (failover).

What are the most common failover clusters?

In an active-passive cluster, the active node provides network services while the passive node waits to take over if the active node fails. In an active-active cluster, both nodes provide fault tolerance and load balancing.

What is load balancing/network load balancing (NLB)?

Multiple computers are configured as one virtual server to share the workload.

Why should a company look at uninterruptible power supplies and power generators?

To provide power when no power is available from the power company.

What is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

An electrical device consisting of one or more batteries to provide backup power when a power outage occurs.

What is a power generator?

A backup electrical system that operates automatically within seconds of a power outage.
