Origin
The fixed attachment of a muscle.
Insertion
The end of a muscle attached to the bone or body part that moves during contraction.
Agonist
The main mover of a joint.
Antagonist
The muscle that opposes the agonist and returns the joint to its original position.
Synergist
A muscle that helps another muscle do its action.
Fixator
A muscle that stabilizes a joint while another muscle performs its action.
Tremor
A condition where both agonist and antagonist muscles receive signals to contract simultaneously, leading to conflict.
Fascicle Organization
The arrangement pattern of muscle fibers within a muscle.
Parallel-Fusiform
Muscle fibers run parallel, and contraction enlarges the middle.
Circular
Muscles that act as sphincters, making an opening smaller upon contraction.
Pennate
Muscle fibers arranged like feathers, with subtypes including unipennate, bipennate, and multipennate.
Naming of Muscle
Muscles can be named based on location, attachments, action, shape, size, or number of origins.
Abductor
A muscle that moves a limb or part away from the midline of the body.
Adductor
A muscle that moves a limb or part toward the midline of the body.
Latin Roots
Word components derived from Latin that describe muscle actions or characteristics.
