Conformity
Process by which individuals adjust their thoughts, feelings, or behavior to align w/ those of a group, as a result of real/imagined group pressure.
Normative Social Influence
The influence to conform to the positive expectations of others, driven by the desire to be liked/accepted by the group.
Social Norms
Unwritten rules that dictate acceptable behavior within a society/group, influencing how individuals act & interact.
Social Comparison
Process of evaluating oneself by comparing w/ others, often to assess one’s abilities, status, or opinions.
Upward Social Comparison
Comparing oneself to others who are perceived to be better off/more skilled, which can motivate self-improvement but also decrease self-esteem.
Downward Social Comparison
Comparing oneself to others who are perceived to be worse off/less skilled, which can boost self-esteem but also foster overconfidence.
Relative Deprivation
Feeling of dissatisfaction/injustice experienced when individuals compare themselves to others & perceive that they are worse off.
Informational Social Influence
Influence to accept info from other as evidence about reality, often occurring in situations where the correct action/belief is uncertain.
Obedience
Act of following direct commands, usually from an authority figure, even if they contradict personal beliefs/morals.
Social Facilitation
Tendency for people to perform differently when in the presence of others, typically showing improved performance on simple/well-practiced tasks & worse performance on complex/new tasks.
Group Polarization
When ppl in a group talk about an idea, they often end up agreeing even more strongly w/ each other, making their group opinion more extreme.
Groupthink
Desire of harmony/conformity in a group → irrational decision-making outcomes. Members suppress diff. opinions, → to loss of individual creativity & responsibility.
Bystander Effect
Phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. (Greater # of bystanders, less likely any 1 individual is to help).
Diffusion of Responsibility
Tendency for individuals to feel less responsible for taking action/helping in a situation when others are present, → decrease in likelihood of intervention.
Social Loafing
Tendency for individuals to exert less effort than working in a group than when working alone.
Deindividuation
Psychological state where individuals lose their self awareness & sense of individuality in group settings, → impulsive & deviant behavior.
