charging by contact
process of transferring charge between objects by touching or rubbing
charging by friction
process of creating charge by the rubbing of two objects
charging by induction
process of charging an object without direct contact
discharge
to neutralize or remove all electric charges
discharge at a point
removing an electric charge by repelling electrons off the tip of a conductor
electric charge
a quantity of electricity that builds up on an object, positive or negative
conductor
A material through which charges can easily flow
insulator
A material in which electrons are not able to move easily
electrostatic series
a list of materials that have been arranged according to their ability to hold on to electrons
grounding
Is the transfer of excess charge through a conductor to Earth
electrostatics
the study of static electric charge
induced charge separation
The movement of electrons in a substance, caused by the electric field of a nearby charged object, without direct contact between the substance and the object.
law of electric charges
the law that states that like charges repel and opposite charges attract
static electricity
a charge on a substance that stays in the same place
How is lightning produced?
Electrons build up in cloud, repelling away electrons on the ground. Then, the like charges attract and the electrons use the air and moisture in the air to travel to the ground. This causes lightning.
