Orthographic Mapping
The ability to map the sounds of spoken words to the letters on the page, allowing for permanent storage of instantly recognizable words.
Sight Word
A word that is recognized automatically and instantly without needing to sound it out.
Phoneme
The smallest unit of sound in speech that distinguishes one word from another.
Phonological Memory
The ability to remember spoken information, such as the sounds of words.
Decoding
The process of sounding out words by mapping letters to their corresponding phonemes.
Phonemic Awareness
The awareness of and ability to manipulate phonemes in spoken words.
Grapheme
A written representation of a phoneme, usually a letter or group of letters.
Unitised
A process where words are stored in memory as unique letter strings that can be instantly recognized.
Cognitive Process
A mental action or operation involved in acquiring knowledge and understanding, especially through thought, experience, and the senses.
Fluency
The ability to read text smoothly and accurately, which is aided by a large bank of sight words.
