1 - motif of sleep
shakespeare suggests guilt and paranoia overpower ambition - "these terrible dreams that shake us nightly" , "murdered sleep" he is plagued by insomnia + LM sleepwalks sleep symbolises purity + innocence - this luxury is stripped from MB due to his sins , (against GCOB, DROK) "o full of scorpions is my mind"

2 - religion aligned with guilt
SP aligns guilt with religion MB acknowlodges (when thinking about killing D) "wed jump the life to come" - this implies that MB is aware of the repercussion of his crimes - he would not enter heaven (heavy contextual significance as MB weighs up the options yet still defies his faith and religion - religion large part of JB era) - suggests MB should have listened to his faith and not the supernatural (witches+LM) "I had need the most blessing" - he knows he is damned and cannot repent for his unforgivable crimes, which leads him down a murderous path

3 - motif of blood as a symbol of guilt
LM believes simple act of hand washing will rid her from her guilt and deed comitted, initially repents all feelings of remorse and guilt "stop up this access and passage to remorse" separates from fem quality that causes her to be weak. TRIES TO SHUN GUILT MB - constantly questions his guilt and what he has comitted - almost as if he is in disbelief "will all great neptunes ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" - use of RQ implies that he is tormented by his guilt and questions what is real anymore? - use of "neptune" may allude to the fact MB has turned away from faith as Neptune is a non christian god

4 - hallucinations
"heat oppressed brain", "never shake thy gory locks at me" "out damned spot out i say!" - use of exclamatory - guilt is portrayed as a cancerous disease, it slowly rids the characters of their consciences and rational thought
