Occupancy Category I (Essential Facilities)
Structures having essential functions such as surgery and emergency treatment areas, fire and police stations, garages for emergency vehicles, aviation control towers, public school buildings, hospitals, designated evacuation centers, and emergency preparedness centers.
Occupancy Category II (Hazardous Facilities)
Occupancies and structures housing or supporting toxic or explosive chemicals or substances, including non-building structures storing, supporting, or containing quantities of toxic or explosive substances.
Occupancy Category III (Special Occupancy Structures)
Structures with assembly rooms with capacity of 1,000 or more occupants, educational buildings with 300 or more occupants, college or adult education with 500 or more occupants, institutional buildings with 50 or more incapacitated patients, and structures with an occupancy of 5,000 or more persons.
Occupancy Category IV (Standard Occupancy Structures)
All structures housing occupancies or having functions not listed in Category I, II, III, or V.
Occupancy Category V (Miscellaneous Structures)
Private garages, carports, sheds, and fences over 1.5m high.
Surface Roughness B
Urban and suburban areas, wooded areas, or other terrain with numerous closely spaced obstructions having the size of single-family dwellings or larger.
Surface Roughness C
Open terrain with scattered obstructions having heights generally less than 9m, including flat open country and grasslands.
Surface Roughness D
Flat, unobstructed areas and water surfaces, including smooth mud flats, salt flats, and unbroken ice.
Response Spectrum Analysis
An elastic dynamic analysis of a structure utilizing the peak dynamic response of all modes having a significant contribution to total structural response calculated using ordinates of an appropriate response spectrum curve.
Time History Analysis
An analysis of the dynamic response of a structure at each increment of time when the base is subjected to a specific ground motion time history.
Seismic Zone 2
Seismic classification covering the provinces of Palawan (except Busuanga), Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, assigned a seismic zone factor Z=0.20.
Seismic Zone 4
Seismic classification covering all parts of the Philippine archipelago not under Zone 2, assigned a seismic zone factor Z=0.40.
Seismic Source Type A
Faults capable of producing large magnitude events with maximum moment magnitude 7.0≤M≤8.4 and having a high rate of seismic activity.
Seismic Source Type B
All faults other than Types A and C, with a maximum moment magnitude 6.5≤M<7.0.
Seismic Source Type C
Faults not capable of producing large magnitude earthquakes (M<6.5) and having a relatively low rate of seismic activity.
Bearing Wall System
A structural system without a complete vertical load-carrying space frame where bearing walls or bracing systems provide support for gravity loads and shear walls or braced frames provide lateral resistance.
Building Frame System
A structural system with an essentially complete space frame providing support for gravity loads, with resistance to lateral load provided by shear walls or braced frames.
Moment-Resisting Frame System
A structural system with an essentially complete space frame providing support for gravity loads, where moment-resisting frames provide resistance to lateral load primarily by flexural action of members.
Dual System
A structural system with an essentially complete space frame supporting gravity loads, where lateral load is resisted by shear walls/braced frames and moment-resisting frames designed to independently resist at least 25% of the design base shear.
Cantilevered Column System
A structural system relying on cantilevered column elements for lateral resistance.
Soil Profile Type SD
Stiff soil profile with average shear wave velocity Vs from 180m/s to 360m/s; default classification used when soil properties are not known in sufficient detail.
Soil Profile Type SE
Soft soil profile with average shear wave velocity Vs<180m/s or any profile with more than 3.0m of soft clay having plasticity index PI>20, moisture content wmc≥40%, and undrained shear strength su<24kPa.
Soil Profile Type SF
Soil profile requiring site-specific geotechnical investigation and dynamic site response analysis to determine seismic coefficients.
